Epiphan's VGA2USB LR™ is a frame grabber capture device that acquires frames with up to 1280×1024 pixel resolution in a 24-bit palette. VGA2USB LR can achieve 1280×1024 lossless compression with up to 51 fps, depending on the content being captured.

The VGA2USB LR is best suited for educational, training, industrial, medical, scientific, and security applications where reliability and performance is a must.

VGA2USB LR's internal hardware comes with 16MB RAM on board, an advanced VGA ADC and a custom Epiphan FPGA engine and that performs lossless compression on board, thus improving USB bus bandwidth utilization, throughput, and FPS

Radar, ultrasound, navigational, security, and microscope imagery is best captured with the VGA2USB LR, as long as the source resolution is kept below 1280 x 1024. The VGA2USB LR is also excellent for capturing from sources with significant movement from frame to frame. VGA2USB LR Software Tools and 3rd Party Applications, Interfaces, SDK

Epiphan VGA2USB LR customers can download free Epiphan Software (Download Software ). Epiphan's software makes it possible to save and print captured images, to setup a periodical "save" command to capture images to disk or record an AVI file (Windows platform only). In addition to that, VGA2USB LR software is compatible with DirectShow on Windows and QuickTime on Mac OS X, which allows third-party applications to use VGA2USB as a video input.

Software development kits are also available for specialized applications.

OpenCast Lecture Capture System

Epiphan VGA2USB LR Matterhorn Open Cast Lecture Capture

The Matterhon OpenCast Lecture Capture system Reference Platform shown is built using Epiphan products. ( See OpenCast Reference Hardware ) The application diagram above is for a lecture capture system that uses VGA2USB LR in order to capture multi media content with resolutions up to 1280 x 1024 and up to 51 FPS.

The Matterhorn Team & Community is an open-source Lecture Capture Management system development effort, led by UC Berkeley Educational Technology Services and ETH Zürich. The project was launched in collaboration among 13 partner institutions from North America and Europe including UC Berkeley, ETH Zürich, University of Osnabrück, Cambridge University, Indiana University, Northwestern University, Jozef Stefan Institute, Open University of Catalonia, University of Copenhagen, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Saskatchewan, University of Toronto and the University of Vigo.

VGA2USB LR Visual Impairment Assistance Device

VGA2USB LR can be used as a visual impairment assistance device as shown in the diagram. The person with a visual impairment connects their computer VGA output of the presenter computer, projector or smart white board via a splitter and a copy of the video stream is displayed on their laptop.

A big advantage this approach is that VGA2USB LR does not require any software to be installed on the presenter's computer. Changing presenter's is also a simple wire connection change. In fact, the content source is not restricted to a computer, it can be any equipment with a VGA output source

The visually impaired person can also use magnification tools to further amplify or zoom in on the images as they fit. VGA2USB LR is particularly suited to applications where the content is rich in resolution and has a higher frame rate requirement than simple slides with text. In the case of presentations with more static material and low frame rates, VGA2USB has less functionality, but can be a more cost effective solution.
