The need: A user-friendly classroom streaming solution
The University of Liège, a well-established and leading institution in Europe, needed a reliable and user-friendly way to stream and record lectures across multiple campuses.
As demand for digital learning grew, faculty recognized the need for a solution that could broadcast lessons in real time or on-demand. This system had to be intuitive enough for non-technical staff while still powerful enough to integrate with the university’s existing infrastructure. It also needed to let students choose from different viewing layouts so they could learn in a way that best suited them.

Equip your campus with best-in-class video solutions
Meet your school’s video production needs with a lineup of flexible and scalable hardware for video capture, streaming, and recording – all centrally managed. Perfect for lecture capture, online learning programs, and more.
The solution: Simplifed lecture capture with Pearl Mini
After considering several products, the University of Liège chose the Epiphan Pearl Mini to improve its lecture streaming and recording setup. More than 90 classrooms were equipped with Pearl Minis, each connecting to existing cameras and audio systems.
To operate the system, instructors simply plug in their laptops and open the UniCast software on a touchscreen interface. From there, they can choose to stream live, record for on-demand viewing, or do both – often with just a few taps.
Seamless integration through Epiphan’s API
A key part of this project was handled by Denis de Marneffe, a systems engineer at the University of Liège. He needed additional commands not available in the standard UI. He used Epiphan’s REST API to define the commands he needed, designing a highly customized workflow.
Epiphan Video’s API also eased file management. Once a lecture is recorded, the system automatically uploads it to a secure NAS server, where it is organized and accessed through UniCast.
The results: Improved learning and teaching experiences
Greater accessibility
Students can watch lectures live or revisit them on-demand. This flexibility helps them catch up on missed material or review complex topics at any time.
Ease for instructors
Thanks to the plug-and-play design, even faculty members with minimal technical know-how can operate the system. They can focus on teaching rather than troubleshooting.
High-quality viewing
Clear audio and video enhance student engagement. Learners can also select from multiple viewing modes – like split-screen, full-screen, or camera-only – to tailor their experience.
Flexible integration
Epiphan Video’s API automates many steps in the workflow and opens the door to further customization. The collaboration between Denis and Epiphan Video highlights the company’s adaptability and client focus.
The University of Liège is known for its commitment to educational innovation and excellence. By adopting cutting-edge solutions like Epiphan Pearl Mini, it continues to meet the ever-changing needs of modern higher education.
