Estimating Oil Spills with Epiphan's DVI2USB
OSIS is a Danish company that specializes in identifying and surveilling oil spills from offshore oil drilling locations. Its Oil Spill Identification System (OSIS) allows onshore observers to perform round the clock online surveillance of offshore operations and obtain accurate measures of oil released into marine environments.
OSIS turned to Epiphan's DVI2USB frame grabber after hearing of its success at another firm in Denmark. "We realized that we could use the DVI2USB solution to view the information displayed on the OSIS radar screen from an onshore location," says Brian Hansen of OSIS. By capturing a DVI signal from the OSIS sensor, OSIS is able to remotely view radar information trrough a PC running via Epiphan's DVI2USB.
"With DVI2USB, onshore users can now receive continuous sensor measurement updates from any offshore location and, in the case of an oil spill, receive an estimate of the contamination area and spill volume." explains Hansen. "OSIS is able to calculate the spill volume with 90% accuracy, so users can now receive a reliable, real-time estimate thanks to DVI2USB."
