DistanceDoc Streams and Records High-Quality Video from a Laparoscopic Tower

Surgery is a powerful technology consisting of multiple large and small branches. It is impossible to embrace all knowledge in surgery areas since the information flow is increasing year after year. Beside, a surgeon who performs the same operation dozens of times is able to obtain more experience in comparison with his/her colleague performing this operation twice a year. A dedicated specialist always has all necessary equipment at fingertips – suture material, special anesthesia apparatus, surgical instruments, etc. Therefore patients are better treated in large specialized centers than in the hospitals offering a complete array of medical care under one roof. Due to the particularities of complex methods, they are hard to be learned to the full extent by those surgeons who are not working in large centres or did not attend training courses. Besides, hospitals may lack appropriate equipment.

DistanceDoc has been used to provide broadcasting and recording of high-quality video from a laparoscopic tower installed in the operating theatre (OR). This device allowed organizing 3-month masterclasses for remotely located surgeons. During this period DistanceDoc was broadcasting 50 surgical operations. All operations were performed by an eminent Ukrainian surgeon and director of Mini-invasive Surgery Clinic Mikhail Serbul who shares his impressions of using this broadcasting appliance: “It is our common practice to organize masterclasses as direct communication between a surgeon and the audience. Unfortunately many specialists interested in the masterclasses are not able to attend. Therefore we need a simple and reliable means to broadcast and record the events. DistanceDoc allows us to achieve this goal. It is a suitable device for using in the operating theatre and fully meets our requirements.”

The first experience of using DistanceDoc was a webinar organized by ivrach.com. During this event streaming video of an online lecture, the lecturer’s display, and presentation slides were available for the audience along with voice communication. The operation (single-port cholecystectomy) has been recorded the previous day. More than ten specialists from different Ukrainian medical centers took part in the webinar. “I would like to teach my colleagues something new and efficient tell them about my techniques and unique approaches to solving specific medical problems. DistanceDoc contributes to this goal streaming and recording high-quality video from the OR”. - summarizes Mikhail Serbul.
