Epiphan Systems' Matterhorn Capture Device™ (MCD) is a capture device for a DVI/VGA video source, an analog video source, and audio designed specifically to interface with the Opencast Matterhorn platform, an open-source platform to support the management of educational audio and video content. It will not function as a stand-alone capture, recording, or streaming solution.

The Matterhorn Capture Device is an easy-to-install out-of-the-box hardware appliance and functions as a fully-featured capture agent and recording device for the Matterhorn platform. Through collaboration with the Matterhorn development community, the onboard firmware automatically wraps the media objects into the Matterhorn-compatible container format (Multitrack AVI file).

Matterhorn Capture Device Features Description

Integrated DVI/VGA support - Epiphan's Matterhorn Capture Device comes packed with an integrated frame grabber on-board. It is able to capture signals from both VGA and DVI sources at resolutions up to 1920x1080 and can achieve capture rates of up to 30 frames per second, meaning that even full motion video and animations that are shown on the presenter's computer are captured, archived, and broadcast in the highest possible quality. Furthermore, unencrypted HDMI video can be captured using a DVI to HDMI adapter.

Audio/Video support - Matterhorn Capture Device has an integrated S-Video input, allowing it to capture analog video at resolutions up to 480i or 640x480 at up to 30 frames per second. Furthermore, a line-in for audio means that the presenter's microphone or audio can be captured as well. Adapters that convert analog video signals into a S-Video signal can also be used in order to capture composite video.

Stand-alone Integrated Capture Appliance - As part of the Opencast lecture capture system, Matterhorn Capture Device works as a stand-alone appliance, sending data over the Ethernet interface to the Matterhorn video capture server. No additional capture agent or hardware is required as the device works out-of-the-box. The device is powered by Power over Ethernet, meaning that no separate power supplies are required, thus reducing clutter and making it easy to install.

Matterhorn Capture Device is a fully-featured low-cost lecture recording appliance that removes the need for a dedicated computer capture agent with splitter, frame grabber, video grabber, and power supplies on the presenters' side, reducing connectors, space and power consumption, maintenance, spares and backups, thus saving money, simplifying installation and increasing reliability with fewer devices in the classroom.

Early Access Program - Promotion ended June 8, 2012

The Matterhorn Capture Device was previously offered as part of an Early Access Program (EAP) with a promotional price, only through the Epiphan web site. Matterhorn EAP program participants may install the latest firmware updates for the Matterhorn Capture Device free of charge. The early access program and promotional pricing ended June 8, 2012.

Epiphan Matterhorn Appliance - Terms of Use

The Epiphan Matterhorn Capture Device is licensed exclusively for use with the Matterhorn Opencast lecture capture system. Support for the Matterhorn Capture Device is done exclusively through the Opencast Matterhorn community.

The Epiphan Matterhorn Capture Device will not function as a stand-alone capture, recording, and/or streaming solution. If you require a stand-alone appliance, please refer to our broadcasting or recording products.
