IT Consulting Company Enhances Technical Writing With Epiphan System’s VGA2USB

Jack Lewis, owner of IT consulting firm, Computers by Design, is often called upon to write manuals and other documentation for the security industry. When one of his manuals required screen captures from a standalone digital security recorder, Lewis found himself without a way to obtain the images he needed.

“The recorder only had one VGA port and I didn’t have anything on hand that would let me acquire high-resolution images,” explains Lewis. “I looked into various screen capture cards and PCI-type solutions, but these required me to bring the customer's products to my office. That's cumbersome and it can be a problem for the customer, who may not want me to walk away with an expensive piece of their equipment.”

Finding a useful frame grabber

In his search for a portable screen capture device, Lewis came across Epiphan’s VGA2USB frame grabber solution. “It was the most economical and versatile solution I could find,” recalls Lewis. “The fact that it is a USB product means that I can take it with me wherever I go and keep my customers happy. In the past, I would take screen shots off a low-resolution composite video screen. But with VGA2USB I’m able to grab an image at the maximum resolution allowed by the client's product.”

Going forward, Lewis plans to use VGA2USB each time he creates a manual for his clients. “I plan to make it a regular part of my work routine.”
